In honour of Ireland’s Year of Science, Deputy Chief of Mission John Hennessey-Niland has announced the details of the “Captioning Space Camp” Competition. The competition prizes, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, will include fully funded trips to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama for two students and one teacher during the summer of 2012.

Abbott, the health care company, is running a competition on the Breakfast with Hector radio show on RTÉ 2fm all this week to celebrate national Science Week. Abbott are big supporters of Ireland’s next generation of scientists through its Family Science and Operation Discovery programmes and this week Abbott will kick off the next round of its programmes in various locations around the county.

League of Extraordinary Elements
All across Ireland primary school children are being invited to participate in an exciting science-art competition to celebrate Science Week 2011 and its theme ‘The Chemistry of Life’. The competition is designed to introduce primary aged children to the general concepts of the elements, and a first introduction to the periodic table through the superhero ‘League of Extraordinary Elements’ with characters such as Hydrogen Girl and Carbon Boy.

Science Snaps
The Science Snaps photography competition, in association with Discover Science and Engineering, and Tyndall National Institute, UCC, invites students and members of the public to capture ‘The Chemistry of Life’, the 2011 Science Week theme.
The competition is open to second level students and the general public with great prizes in three categories including a laptop, cameras, phones and photography courses. Shortlisted images will also form a public exhibition during Science Week 2011 and the winning snaps will be displayed by Bus Éireann on selected commuter routes throughout Ireland.
