League of Extraordiary Elements Winners
All across Ireland primary school children are being invited to participate in an exciting science-art competition to celebrate Science Week 2011 and its theme ‘The Chemistry of Life’. The competition is designed to introduce primary aged children to the general concepts of the elements, and a first introduction to the periodic table through the superhero ‘League of Extraordinary Elements’ with characters such as Hydrogen Girl and Carbon Boy.
Students are asked to design a new costume for the character they like from the table of six element profiles which are provided in a PDF download available on the website ScienceWeek.ie in the Resources section. The PDF download can be printed out by teachers to use as a talking point in the class. The PDF contains a blank template page in which children draw their picture. Teachers can photocopy this page or if preferred distribute the handout to each child. Student name, age, class and school name should be recorded on this page, as well as the name of their chosen character.
There are three categories and from each a winner will be chosen based on the best character and costume designed. Each winner will receive an individual prize of a Nintendo 3DS, as well as winning a science show to come to their school for the day. The deadline is Friday October 28th 2011 and only one entry per child can be accepted. The full competition details and terms and conditions are available on the last page of the PDF.
