Description:

Demonstration Lecture with Michael McCarthy, Waterford Institute of Technology. Presenting aspects of Calculus to Leaving Certificate students in a highly interactive fashion, towards establishing an intuitive understanding of what Calculus is, and how useful it can be as a mathematical instrument. The concept of Integral Calculus is introduced using a statistical (“Monte Carlo”) approach that is employed quite often by computers to solve mathematical problems involving Calculus. Students are invited to interactively “compute” solutions to problems by throwing small objects within a closed space and use webcam snapshots to yield a result. For 6th year secondary students.
