Shows bring science to life

  • Sue McGrath performing the Science2Life Show at the National Ploughing Championships 2007

Roadshows are among the highlights of Science Week — an opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time. Here are some of the great shows, demonstrations and presentations lined up for Science Week 2007. For more details, see the Science Week calendar of events.

    Anyone4Science - Science is a Rollercoaster

The fair is in town, the rollercoaster looks terrifying, but fun! You are in the queue and can't wait for your turn. Is this just mindless fun or is it a real life scientific experience? Join Any4Science at a demonstration lecture to learn all about energy and forces and perhaps change the way you think about the fairground forever.

Or how about the mystery of flight? Humans have always been fascinated by flight. Come along and learn all about how forces and materials determine the possible and the impossible of flying.

The aim is to emphasise the importance of the environment and the animals in it, through fun, inspiring and hands-on learning.

  • Think Differently - Dramatic Demonstrations

Think Differently’s “Move It!” is a fast-moving interactive show that explores the forces and energy that are so important to our everyday lives. Come along and

    • Jump with “anti-gravity” boots
    • Discover if air is stronger than metal
    • Travel on a hovercraft to a world with little friction
    • Explore the explosive energy behind rockets!

The show uses dramatic demonstrations and lots of interactive techniques to engage all of the audience. It lasts 60 minutes and is designed to create experiences that are both educational and entertaining.

  • REMEDI - All about how bodies work

Did you know that your body is made up of cells? That genes (not jeans) decide what we will look like? That bacteria lived on earth long before dinosaurs?

Ready Set Bio! is an exciting primary science programme which introduces a hands-on approach to teaching science in the classroom. Developed by REMEDI, a research institute based at NUIG, this interactive and engaging programme supports the 4th - 6th class primary science curriculum.

  • Science2Life - Sue McGrath AKA “Splooze”

The Science2Life show is an explosive and energetic performance which aims to relate the abstract world of science to everyday objects and experiences. Splooze - our scientist turned magician-of-sorts - will be performing. Beware - volunteers are an essential part of her crazy energetic show and there is a serious danger of... fun!

Erupting volcanoes, indoor snow storms, buckets of oozy and bouncy slime, water disappearing, reappearing, changing colour, musical straws and balloons, vacuum packed volunteers, making and eating of honeycomb and ice-cream. These are just some of the magical experiments designed to wow and captivate visitors to the roadshow. Check out Sue’s book of science magic.
