Mayo Science and Technology Festival 2009
-
Students get a demonstration!
The Mayo Science and Technology Festival takes place during Science Week 2009 and is organised by John Magee. The inaugural Mayo Science and Technology Festival in 2007 proved to be an outstanding success.
The Festival is an exciting blend of interactive shows, industry demonstrations and opportunities for young people to get involved. It aims to highlight the importance of the science, engineering and technology industries which provide a wide array of exciting and fulfilling career opportunities, and it plays an important role in ensuring that young people are able to make the link between the choices they make at Leaving Certificate & 3rd Level, as well as the various science, technology, and engineering employment opportunities that may be available to them.
John says: “I’m not a scientist in the commonly understood sense of the word, although I did once take a course in “the History & Philosophy of Science”! My interest stems from a passion for the future and in being prepared for it, and being equipped with the skills and aptitudes to go and create it!”
“We are working on a full programme of events, which will include a ‘Science in Action’ Family Open Day, Schools Design Challenge, a ‘Teanga agus Teicneolíocht’ day, school visits to locations of scientific interest, science lectures and a robotics lab. Plans are also underway for an exciting evening of talks and presentations inspired by the ‘TED’ and ‘Ignite’ global phenomena.” These are just some of the events that are planned for the Mayo Science and Technology Festival.
Some of the acts that will be involved in the ‘Science in Action’ Family Open Day come from Madlabs, Science Ireland, Think Differently!, Space Encounters, Jackson Engineering, Ireland West Airport Knock, Lionbridge Technologies, Allergan, Fort Wayne Metals, Shell, Coca Cola, Mayo Fire Service, an Garda Síochána, the Marine Institute, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, the Physics Department NUIG and the Marine Department NUIG.
It is organised with the backing of The Mayo County Development Board, and runs from November 9thto 15th. When the timetable is completed full details can be found on www.mayoscience.ie.
