First Fridays at the Blackrock Castle Observatory

    CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory’s First Fridays at the Castle is a series of free events held on the first Friday of every month, in association with the Cork Science Café and the Cork Astronomy Club. It features lectures and discussions by visiting scientists, guided stargazing in Blackrock Castle’s courtyard and workshop activities for children.

    Running from 1st October, the evenings will start at 6pm with family-friendly space age workshops and craft activities. At 7pm, it’s the Cork Science Café followed by lectures from visiting speakers. Topics range from archaeoastronomy to nanotechnology.

    The exhibit Cosmos at the Castle is open and free to visitors at First Fridays at the Castle. Enjoy Denis Walsh’s exciting photography exhibition, which shows the results of Astronomical Use of Cameras or join BCO stargazing in the courtyard with Jupiter and Capella visible weather dependent. There is ample free parking and the Castle Bar and Restaurant is open till late.

    Great Worldwide Star Count

    The Great Worldwide Star Count will be held from October 29 – November 12, 2010 and encourages everyone to go outside, look skyward after dark, note the stars in certain constellations, and report what they could see online! Blackrock Castle Observatory will be talking about the Star Count in the run up to Science Week and during the Week itself.

    About Blackrock Castle Observatory

    Blackrock Castle was originally built on the Lee in 1582 by the citizens of Cork as a watch tower and fort to guard the river entrance against pirates and other invaders. Now in an exciting collaboration between Cork City Council and the Cork Institute of Technology, Blackrock Castle Observatory, the Space for Science, watches the skies above, the world around us and the future in its quest to bring new adventures in science to its many visitors. Cosmos at the Castle is the international award-winning interactive astronomy exhibit at Blackrock Castle Observatory.
