The winners of a national science photography competition, Science Snaps, were announced following the conclusion of Science Week 2010. Science Snaps is a national photographic competition hosted by Discover Science and Engineering and the Tyndall National Institute, Cork, which takes place every year in the run up to Science Week. The competition was open to junior and senior cycle secondary school students, as well as the general public. The theme for this year’s competition was “The Wonder of Small Science”, which is inspired by the revolutionary science of nanotechnology.
First prize in the General Public category went to Bernard Dunne, from Naas Co Kildare, for his photograph ‘Science Leap’. Bernard won a Canon EOS 500D.
Sinead O’Neill, a student from St Flannan’s College Ennis was awarded first place in the Senior Cycle category, for her photograph entitled ‘An Eye for Nano Science’. Sinead won a laptop kindly sponsored by DELL.
First Prize in the Junior Cycle category went to Kate Riordan, from, Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Cork for her photograph entitled ‘Coloured Transpiration’. Kate won a Flip camcorder generously sponsored by CPL.
The winning entries and a shortlist of finalists were on display in Dublin and Cork during Science Week. In addition, Bus Éireann displayed the winning pictures on in-coach posters on a selection of routes across the country. A gallery of all the photo entries can be seen at pix.ie/go/sciencesnaps.
Peter Brabazon, Programme Director, Discover Science and Engineering said,
The Science Snaps competition was designed to challenge people to think about the prevalence of science in our lives and to visually illustrate examples of science shaping the world we live in. I would like to congratulate this year’s winners who demonstrated both scientific knowledge and creativity in their entries.
Kieran Flynn, Head of Business Development at Tyndall National Institute, added,
The judges had a hard time choosing the winning photos due to the high standard entries. We had over 420 entries and the participants came up with some very interesting and creative shots which they believe celebrate “The Wonder of Small Science”.
