The winners of the Science Week national science photography competition, Science Snaps, have been announced. Science Snaps is an annual science photography competition and exhibition run by Tyndall National Institute and Discover Science and Engineering which challenges people to think about the prevelance of science in their everyday lives.

First prize in the junior cycle category went to Paul McKay from Wesley College Dublin for his excellent photo ‘Water Drop’. First prize in the senior cycle schools category went to Anna McCarthy from Coláiste An Phiarsaigh Glanmire, Cork for her creative and clever shot ‘Love is Sweet’. Both have won a HTC Sensation generously sponsored by Vodafone and prizes from the Gallery of Photography Ireland.

First prize in the general public category went to Christina Ní Dheaghaidh from Dublin for her beautiful image ‘Pollen Fest’. Christina has won a laptop generously sponsored by Dell.

Exhibitions of highly commended entries from the annual Science Snaps photography competition take place at the Discovery Exhibition in Cork City Hall on Nov 12–15th, in the Gallery of Photography in Temple Bar and in Dublin City Libraries and Cork City Libraries during Science Week Nov 13–20th and beyond.

The theme for the photo entries was the Science Week 2011 theme, ‘The Chemistry of Life’. The theme challenged people to think about the integral role science plays in our everyday lives and to express this in a creative way. Aoife O’Donoghue, Tyndall’s Outreach Officer commented,

We had over 200 entries with some very interesting and creative shots representing the Chemistry of Life; the judges were very impressed with the standard.

Judges included Tom Kennedy, Editor of Science Spin magazine, Darragh Shanahan, Gallery of Photography Ireland and Judith Moffett of CPL.

The competition and exhibitions are run by Tyndall National Institute and Discover Science and Engineering and sponsored by Dell, CPL, Vodafone and the INSPIRE programme. INSPIRE (Integrated NanoScience Platform for Ireland) is a national nanoscience research consortium, enabled by the Higher Education Authority Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions.
