Gerry Johnston
The Science Behind Hollywood Special Effects

The second of our Science Week lecturers was Gerry Johnston, a special effects guru who has worked on major Hollywood films such as Saving Private Ryan and Braveheart. During the course of his lecture, Gerry discusses his career with RTE broadcaster Dave Fanning. At the start of the lecture a short movie is shown which illustrates how some of the Hollywood effects are created. Gerry then goes on to talk about the amazing opportunities he has been able to take advantage of during the course of his career, listing a who’s who of Hollywood royalty that he has worked with over the years. Finally the audience gets to ask the question on everyone’s lips — how do you get to work in special effects? For more information please read the full report here.
