As part of Science Week 2009, Discover Science & Engineering, in association with the Science Gallery, held a Science Week Lecture Series for schools. This lecture series was aimed at second level schools and focused on careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), with experts in sensor technology, sustainable energy, the space industry and design and innovation, discussing career opportunities in these areas.

Damini Kumar
‘Design, creativity and innovation’Damini Kumar is the winner of the Young British Female Inventor of the Year Award 2001 and is currently product design programme director in the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. She is the inventor of the non-drip teapot.
Damini works with Women into Science, Engineering and Construction to encourage young women into engineering and science. She gained a degree in mechanical engineering from Imperial College London and an MSc in Engineering Product Design from London South Bank University. -
Donagh O'Mahony
‘Lasting the pace in space’Donagh O’Mahony from the Tyndall National Institute gave an overview of the challenges presented by space exploration and a summary of Ireland’s role in technology development for space.
The Tyndall National Institute in Cork has collaborated in technology development and device testing activities with the European Space Agency (ESA) since 1982. It was designated an ESA microelectronics test support laboratory in 1988. Donagh gave an overview of the type of work conducted at the Tyndall National Institute and highlighted the career opportunities open to students. -
Dr Cian Ó Mathúna
‘Sensing the future’Dr Cian Ó Mathúna from CLARITY, a Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology, discussed research undertaken at the Tour of Ireland cycling event. During the event sensor technology was used to examine the effects the event had on competitors and their environment.

SEI and ENI Energy
‘The challenges and opportunities’Sheila Nolan and John Kirby gave a talk on behalf of Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) on renewable energy. Sheila and John are research students as part of UCD’s Energy Needs Ireland (ENI) group. During the presentation, they discussed climate change, renewable energy in Ireland today and for the future. A number of other students from ENI joined them at the end of the talk for the Q&A session.
