    The work of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food laboratories underpins the safety of food products produced in Ireland and the health status of animals and plants in the country. The large scope of testing procedures used at the laboratories, which range from routine culture for bacteria and viruses through molecular techniques to sophisticated chemical analyses, emphasises the broad range of scientific principles used daily at the laboratories. There are over 350 staff, of various scientific backgrounds, located at the new “central” facility at Backweston, Co Kildare and eight other sites throughout the country.

Second-level students can participate in a Science Week 2011 SciFest Crossword. The crossword is downloadable from the SciFest website.

    Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), Ireland’s national energy agency, plays a leading role in transforming Ireland into a society based on sustainable energy structures, technologies and practices. SEAI is carrying out a week of energy challenge workshops for primary students in conjunction with the Ilac library, Dublin City Centre during Science Week in 2011.     Teagasc supports Discover Science and Engineering’s goal of promoting the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives. The annual Walsh Fellowship Seminar, which recognises the work of Teagasc’s top postgraduate students, takes place this year on Tuesday, 8 November in the RDS, Dublin, as part of Teagasc’s Science Week activities. Professor William Reville, Associate Professor in Biochemistry in UCC and writer for the The Irish Times science page, is chairing the judging panel. The guest speaker is Professor Maurice Boland, Principal at the College of Life Sciences, UCD. A new partnership agreement between Teagasc and UCD has been concluded, formalising the existing working relationship between the two organisations in research and education. During Science Week, Teagasc research centres are inviting students from secondary level schools to see practical examples of the use of science in agriculture and food production. This is the fifth year that Teagasc has organised science week events in each of its main centres to promote science among second level students. Over 1,000 people are expected to attend Teagasc’s Science Week events.
