Renowned spectacle theatre company Macnas is set to make its Cork premiere at the vibrant Marina Market on Sunday, 9 November, as part of Science Week 2025. Known for their breathtaking visual storytelling and large-scale outdoor performances, Macnas will bring a powerful new production that explores the theme of biodiversity loss, with a particular focus on the disappearance of the corncrake across Ireland.
Audiences can expect a stunning procession featuring drummers, stilt walkers, giant puppets, and sculptural installations, all woven into a narrative that highlights the urgent need to protect Ireland’s natural habitats. The corncrake, once a familiar sound in the Irish countryside, is now a rare and poignant symbol of environmental decline. Macnas’ performance will bring this story to life in a way that is both visually captivating and emotionally resonant.
An installation inspired by the performance will remain at Marina Market until Thursday, 13 November, allowing visitors to engage with the themes of the show beyond the live event. The installation will be showcased alongside SpaceFest, a Science Week-funded programme celebrating space exploration and discovery.
This marks a significant moment for Science Week in Cork, building on the success of last year’s event, when ALF (A Life Form) captivated audiences with its immersive storytelling and interactive experiences. That production, also supported by Science Week, explored the intersection of science and imagination, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and setting a high bar for future programming.
Science Week 2025 continues to push boundaries, bringing together art, science, and community in innovative ways. Macnas’ premiere promises to be a highlight of this year’s celebrations, inviting audiences of all ages to reflect on the beauty of biodiversity and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
